North of Bordeaux on the Médoc peninsula, the vines of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) Haut-Médoc extend over 60 kilometers, representing 28% of the Médoc vineyard.
The Great Terroir of the Médoc.
The wine-growing area is set on the alluvial terraces shaped into hipped by the erosion of the left bank of the Garonne. The soils are composed of clays and Garonne gravels. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, emblematic grape varieties of Bordeaux, are particularly popular on these terroirs. Video of the Médoc Wine Council.
Médoc Wine Appellations.
Along the left bank of the Gironde River, the Médoc is a wine region north of Bordeaux, which instinctively evokes the great red wines of Bordeaux. To the north, the Médoc, then further south the Haut-Médoc and its communal appellations: Margaux, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe, Moulis-en-Médoc, Listrac-Médoc. The terroirs are known for their gravel rumps that allow the best creations of Bordeaux wines.
